The Grand Palace
Wat Phra Keo
Started in the 1780s, the Grand Palace is a stunning group of buildings. They house various museums / collections. The gardens are also impressive.

The Wat contains the so called Emerald Buddha, which is actually made from Jade. It was 'rediscovered' in 1434 - its real age unknown - covered in plaster, rather like the Golden Buddha was, much more recently.

A visit to the Grand Palace can be easily combined with a visit to Wat Po. Alight at Tha Chang from the River Boats and walk for less than 5 minutes; the best way to get there! Of course there are numerous organised tours from hotels etc. Local guides can be hired at the Palace if you want to learn more; I just love to wander around, and always discover something new.

Refreshments are available at the ticket kiosk area and at the exit. Drinks can be purchased where one leaves the Wat to enter the Palace - very welcome on a hot day.
